Re: Minecraft
Bumping this much to my dismay.
Since it's been pointed out that JK2 is dying herp derp, Minecraft is a way to keep some of us together on a regular basis. With the 1.8 update out and running (with the usual problems for Java,) it's something I can actually enjoy now and will most likely hang around in on a regular basis.
It could be setup in a matter of minutes.
(Also, get on the chatbox!)

Re: Minecraft
It's actually already set up and has been running for a while now on a, let's call it a limited field trial with some friends.
I had to do a lot of work to get it all set up with Bukkit to support plugins, then plugins for permissions stuff and other plugins for things to amuse us, write scripts to backup the world and such, but it's mostly ready to go now and I think all the kinks are ironed out.
The last thing to do is to wait until Bukkit gets updated to 1.8 so I can migrate everything we have right now over. Hopefully that happens today or tomorrow and then give me at least until the end of the week to migrate the existing world into a newly generated one and I'll start taking requests for admission.
I will repeat all this again when it's time to start letting you folks in, but for now here's the important stuff:
It's going to remain a whitelist server, so anyone who would like to join will have to request they be added to the whitelist. This means no guarantees! Additionally, we'll be operating the server on a strict no warnings policy. Basically, don't mess with other people's stuff. If you do, you're off the whitelist with no second chances.
I know this is very different from how we run the jk2 server, but that's because in jk2 you just respawn with no harm done. It's just a game with no consequences. The people who have been testing the Minecraft server with me have already put a lot of their time into building some pretty cool structures and I'd hate to see their stuff get destroyed and time wasted by someone who is just bored. So just be nice. Obviously collaborative structures are collaborative, and I hope we can get some really awesome collab stuff going 'cause that seems to be where all the fun is had.
So I'll let you know when it's ready!

Re: Minecraft
I have the server set up right now so it doesn't check names, that way anyone can log in and play. Problem is, there's no way to prevent fakers in a system like this, and there's no logins of any kind for admins or anything. So I don't see how else to do it other than to flip the switch to have it verify accounts.
Re: Minecraft
Well, that's great news Wonko What plugins do you plan to use?
@blivvy: Well, $21 is nothing compared to that $110 for MW3, right? AT least Minecraft is completely different and actually worth the money.

yeah, I'm not getting into this either.
edit:
So yeah, I just watched a youtube thing for like 15 seconds, and I don't feel the appeal.

Re: Minecraft
The server is set up with a few plugins for permission-based stuff that you'd never notice, but I'm working on configuring one called MobArena which looks like it'll be fun.
Basically, once you enter the arena and pick your character class you're armed with certain weapons and tools and such and the plugin sends wave after wave of enemies at you and anyone else in the arena. It'll create bosses after a certain number of waves, and gives you various rewards based on the wave difficulty. I've already created the arena for this and made it large enough for several players to join and work together. I think it'll be a lot of fun.
Here's the arena I built for it:

Re: Minecraft
Only foreseeable problem I have with it is that people have already built stuff. It's annoying for me. I like joining a server with a few people and building something. Just personal preference.

Re: Minecraft
It's an infinitely huge world. If you want to build in an untainted area, just walk in any direction for a few minutes and set up shop there.
The latest word on Bukkit 1.8 is they're trying to track down some hard to reproduce bugs. I get the feeling it may take them a while, possibly the end of this week or even next week, though I hope not. In any case, once it's released I'll need at least a week to give everyone the chance to move any structures they want to keep into the newly generated terrain before I open up the server.
Edit: Did you miss the part where I created an awesome Mortal Kombat arena?!?!

Re: Minecraft
So, what, are we talking normal Minecraft or admin-y style spawning unlimited stuff?
If you're interested, it's LordJSparrow on Minecraft.

Re: Minecraft
It's normal Minecraft for the moment, though the new Creative mode is something I'll take a look at once I get the server up to 1.8.
But MobArena may not work in Creative mode, we'll see.

Re: Minecraft
Alright so the server is finally migrated fully over to 1.8, but at this point it looks like 1.9 is due to be released any day now and will require the same migration I just finished doing. I'm not sure if I'll do all that over again or just re-generate the Nether with the new features, but either way the fewer players on the server when I go to do that, the easier it's going to be.
So I'm going to hold off opening up the server until 1.9. Sorry

Re: Minecraft
[Bump..] Now that MC 1.0 is out, I think this would be an excellent server to start back up.. Sidneys1 in Mincraft

Hey Sidneys!
Thanks for letting us know about your server. Hopefully those who play Minecraft 'round here can check it out.
(minus a for Blivvy for forgetting Sid!! It's only fair he lose one since he gave Sid one on the linked topic).
PS: Come to the server for some trippy turkey topsy-turviness!

Re: Minecraft
Small misunderstanding.. I don't have my own server, I was asking if Wonko could restart his (he said he'd wait till Beta 1.9 was out, but now Minecraft is out of Beta and yeh..)Theicecreaman wrote:Thanks for letting us know about your server. Oh ok You said "Sidneys1 in Minecraft" or something like that, so I figured that's the name of a server. My bad.
Yeah, I don't play Minecraft.

Re: Minecraft
Heyooo Sid! Welcome back!
Yeah, I've been slacking a bit . It seemed like a lot of new features were going to be released in v1.8 and 1.9 which would require new land generation, so I decided to wait. But then they slacked off too and 1.9 wasn't released when they planned to release it, and then they said there'd be a 1.9 and a 1.10 before final, but then neither happened, and now here we are at final release and I don't know what their plans are anymore.
But anyway, I still have to wait for Bukkit to release an update to 1.0.

Re: Minecraft
So, why are you waiting for bukkit? Why can't you just run a normal mc server?Wonko the Sane wrote:But anyway, I still have to wait for Bukkit to release an update to 1.0.

Re: Minecraft
The only plugins currently set up on it are server side, so you wouldn't need anything extra. That's the nice thing about the way Bukkit is set up.
