Re: New Game Releases
Yeah there's cursing
They're called the "Bad Company" because they were given a choice to either go to jail for whatever reason or join the extremely expendable Bad Company squad. So, of course, all the characters are "bad boys" (the exception being the protagonist, who is likable) and they'll drop the f-bombs while in combat. I'll see if there's a filter on my copy...I'll let you know.
If language is a factor, even the new MOH takes place in Afghanistan and would probably have cursing.
I still say go with Crysis 2...look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laIghwTFdqg
The only caveat is that they curse in this one too...I heard the f word once in this video. I only noticed because you don't want too much cursing.

Re: New Game Releases
Honestly he wouldn't care, but my mom would never let him play it if the game had noticeable cussing.
Re: New Game Releases
I'm gonna get crysis 2. Heard the campaign was really good and there is supposed to be a lot of epic battles and stuff

Re: New Game Releases
Side note: Anyone play Splinter Cell: Conviction? I absolutely loved the first Splinter Cell game but I haven't played any since. I heard Conviction is very different from previous games in terms of stealth and such. Is it?
As far as games for my dad, Crysis is probably too sci-fi for him. I don't remember ever seeing him play sci-fi games like that. Has anyone played Modern Warfare 2?

Re: New Game Releases
How's Red Dead Redemption compare to the games brought up so far? It's historicalish so he'd probably like the environment...
Re: New Game Releases
I played Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (or whatever it was called) and Double Agent. I heard Conviction was more about action than stealth.
As for Modern Warfare, yeah that's a great game too. Just don't expect a very lengthy campaign. (and make sure your mom doesn't find out about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NMnnMRWJ-0 )
edit: RDR is awesome Recommended.
edit2: the person playing in that video sucks. When I play, there's much more carnage

Re: New Game Releases
It's a pretty interesting campaign (MW2). Haven't played it myself but I watched a Walkthrough. As Ice said, it's over quickly in SP since MP is where it's at in CoD for some reason. You can skip that mission if you feel uneasy about playing it so it's not that big a deal (refering to No Russian).

Re: New Game Releases
MW2 campaign was okay. I liked the stealth missions. But I much prefered the black ops campaign.
Atm I'm playing tru the Crysis campaign but it's kinda laggy cause I haven't gotten my new cpu yet.
Anyway so far it's fairly good. I like how u can mod the weapons with different attachments and with the nanosuit, u can activate different abilities like strength, speed, armor and cloak. For example: if u increase ur strength, u can jump higher, pick up & throw heavier objects, punch tru walls etc.

Re: New Game Releases
I think I'm starting to lean towards Red Dead Redemption. Compare its gameplay to the MoH series games.
Re: New Game Releases
Sure, no problem.Wonko the Sane wrote:Compare its gameplay to the MoH series games please.
Well, RDR is made by the same people that make the Grand Theft Auto series, so it's all open-world style. Unlike MOH, where you progress by mission like in jka (different campaigns in WWII/different missions on different planets), you have all of Texas and northern Mexico to explore.
(I'm gonna spoil the plot for ya if that's ok)
- Spoiler:
- You start off with one goal: to kill this one dude who rides with some outlaw gang you were once a part of. You literally walk up to his doorstep (or, rather, fortress) and get your ass shot. This chick riding along on her carriage picks you up, takes you to the doctor, and lets you chill there for a while. You don't have any money when you wake up, so you start off doing extremely cumbersome farm tasks until you're on your own. After a few missions, you start working your way up and getting money and interacting with all the characters until you kill the guy you have to kill.
The end, right? No.
You have to kill the guy because these annoying government agents have your wife and kid "kidnapped" sorta, and you have to do some more tasks in Mexico, following by this other town in Texas. It's all really fun, you know, you fight in epic rebellions in Mexico and do all these awesome missions. Finally, you meet up with your family and you teach your son hunting and help out around the ranch and stuff. However, all the government people come after you and you and your wife get killed. You then play as the son. The end.
In terms of MoH, it's similar, but not quite the same thing.

there's even a zombie mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYJnynF2PZs&feature=relmfu
Re: New Game Releases
Undead Nightmare is a lot of fun.
As for RDR itself, that's really good too. The campaign takes a while to get tru, there are plenty of missions and side missions to do and there is a LOT to explore. Has some good humor too

I didn't read the original post, but I liked Borderlands if you can get hold of it cheap.

Re: New Game Releases
How about some good ol' orange box?
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2episode2ob/index.html?sid=6180730
He's bound to like Half Life if he's into Allied Assault, and Portal is just awesome.
Is he into Grand Theft Auto?
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/grandtheftauto4/review.html?tag=tabs%3Breviews
If so, GTA 4 is awesome, despite the fact that you need a Windows Live account to save. (another example of how silly corporate media is)

Re: New Game Releases
@Jack: go back and read the original post.
@Ice: GTA is a terrible game series. I always much preferred the Driver series where there was actually a plot and a point other than running around killing people and banging whores then killing them too to get your money back. Also, like I said, I've never seen him play a sci-fi type game.
@Bliv: Thanks, I'll check those out finally someone around here is useful. Thousand points for being useful.

Re: New Game Releases
Haha GTA 4 is awesome though. You don't drive around aimlessly screwing whores...there's actually a plot, and it's great. But if that isn't your/his style, so be it. But you should know that GTA 4 is nothing like the previous GTA games...it has a great story with interesting themes and symbolism.
edit:
oh, and by the way, what about Assassins Creed?
AC 1
AC 2
AC: Brotherhood
They are as historical as you'd want to get.

Re: New Game Releases
I did look at those briefly, tell me more. Compare the style of gameplay to games like MoH.
Re: New Game Releases
haha damn man you gotta learn to say please no need to be stern, I mean, it isn't like you're going to get whipped if you buy the wrong game. chill out a bit.
Assassins Creed is free-roam, but it is more mission-oriented like MoH is. There is really nothing I can say about the game that the reviews on the websites do not cover.
In terms of MoH, it isn't quite the same thing, as the missions are more about assassinating people and keeping up with the storyline. There are a few Sci Fi elements, though. You are actually a person in the 21st century whose ancestor's memories are accessed through a device called the "animus." This isn't really a big part of the game, so it it is still more of an action/adventure game.
"The Assassin's Creed games have gone to great lengths to depict their environments and circumstances with painstaking historical authenticity, and Brotherhood is no exception." - one of the reviews

bleh, there's a million vids to watch. just youtube around.

Re: New Game Releases
Good Recommendation Ice
I found AC2 to be much better than the 1st one. The missions are more varied and story is more intriguing. They took everything from the 1st game and improved upon it and to me, AC2 is what the original should have been.
Gameplay is based on stealth but u can choose to do things w/e way u want. For example: u can charge in and fight enemies head on or u can move stealthily across rooftops and take them out from above.

Re: New Game Releases
It should be noted that it's not completely free-roam. You're restricted to certain areas but they're normally quite large from what I've seen.

Re: New Game Releases
AC 1 and AC 2 were pretty free in their respective environments...AC: Brotherhood is more mission-based and less free roam.
Re: New Game Releases
So what did ya decide on?
For some reason, I came across this just now surfin' around and I remembered that you were looking for a military-type game: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/armaii/index.html?tag=tabs%3Bsummary

Re: New Game Releases
I just couldn't find anything that would match up to MoH, although Blivvy's recommendation, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway looked like a game he'd love (thanks Bliv!). Only problem is that game's graphics are a bit dated now, and I wanted a new game that would show off what his new computer could do. It's super cheap, so I'll probably pick it up for him for his birthday or something down the road.
For something brand spankin' new, though, I ordered the new Medal of Honor game today. I went through his stack of games again and found Battlefield 2 and a BF2 expansion pack, so he'll be fine with something with a more modern theme. The graphics look fairly impressive and the gameplay seems similar to the older versions.
Honestly, though, I can't wait for this whole "modern combat" phase to wear off. I want to see more Vietnam era games. Battlefield Vietnam always was my favorite. Gotta love those Hueys!!!
Also, I got Splinter Cell: Conviction for me the other day. Haven't played it yet, but it looks pretty slick.
