Oh noes! Violent video games will destroy us all!

[begin rant]

Seriously though? I've played alot of games throughout my life and as a child, I didn't consider the likes of Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda violent at all. No blood, just fun.

Ask them to define violent, and if they stall, they don't know what violent is nowadays.

'Specialists' say that video games are the cause of so much crime today. I, for one, find the games a solution to them. When I'm angry and I feel like I wan to shoot people randomly, where can I do it in record time without hurting anyone and even loading a previous save to maintain my 'good' stats? Thats right, it's a video game! :O

It's pathetic, it really is. Honestly, if the government spent as much time doing something about crime as they do trying to prevent kids from finding an escape from the harsh realities of the world, then they would'nt have to play the ducking things!

[/end rant]

There was a story I heard recently of a young child who, one minute was just sitting watching tv with his dad and the next he went and found his dad's gun, returned to the tv room and shot him. Called 911: "I just shot my dad."

Now, obviously his dad's a moron for not locking that thing up, or even having a gun in the house in the first place. But, still, you have to stop and think... what made that kid think it was okay to go pick that gun up in the first place? What made him think he could point it at another person and it'd be fun? What made him think pulling the trigger wouldn't be a decision that'd change his life and end someone else's... dammit!!! Where's the fcking reset button!!?!

Seriously, think about that.

Video games? Bad parenting? Society?

Guns don't kill people, dangerous minorities do.

It's all the stuff they stick on the TV nowadays. All the same sh*t I see. All the same adverts. One minute of those crap ads is enough to make me want to kill someone.

Supreme Court Evaluating Game Sales to Minors Empty Re: Supreme Court Evaluating Game Sales to Minors

Post by Theicecreaman Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:55 pm

I think what is more important than a rating is the game itself and the time in which is is released. For example, I was playing Grand Theft Auto 3, a popular and controversial game of 2001, and noticed how it wouldn't be very controversial today. When it came out, people went insane and all the child shrinks got all uptight, for the right reasons. However, if it came out today, it would be so unimportant compared to modern censorship (pixelated blood, comic-y graphics). Then when it comes to the game, I think of a game called World of Warcraft. Psychologists have theorized that it is more addicted than crack cocaine. In that game, people must constantly level up and interact with other players. And well... I think you all know the plot of that game... so I won't really explain it.

But really, it's more about how addictive, atmospheric, or explicit a game is than rather its rating. I don't think any kid is going to be too affected by Battlefield, Halo, or Call of Duty, than maybe GTA, WoW, HL, or other games of that sort.

...And of course everyone here is going to want to be against censorship. duh.

EDIT: oh, and also don't forget about all the psychological factors like upbringing, morals, ethics, social status, etc.
EDIT2: Also, too many parents are so obsessed with preserving their youth, keeping their budget/job, and appeasing their kids to even care, and that is what needs to be changed. But, of course, it is American tradition to tell government to f*** off when it comes to this type of sh*t...so expect things to become worse. Do you really think parents in poorer countries care about how kickass the knome in their front yard looks, or how much pride they have in some things? No.... of course not. *blah blah blah continues on about the sentence you can imagine when I'd write*

obama is bringing socialism into the United States and destroying the economy, health care, schools, jobs, even life itself is getting diffacult with obama as President.

Canada even told us never to even think about going near socialism! Plus they're saying that from experience! And guess what obama did... HE'S TURNING THE WHOLE COUNTRY TO SOCIALISM 1 SECOND AT A TIME, AS WE SPEAK!

Theicecreaman wrote:I'm just going to lock this topic before we get into a discussion about how stupid Americans are about the emotions of pride and comfort.

The entire world is against nuclear weapons and the US STILL has the most weapons. I am very pleased to see the president make such a wise decision as to renew the START treaty of the 90's (which was an excellent treaty by Clinton). I don't base topics such as these or my censorship by my ideals: I base it upon modern human nature. What do you care about more: A person's image or the suffering of hundreds of people? Do you think the hypothetical 5 dollars you want to send to Haiti, which could help maybe 10-15 people, magically "fly" over to there? No. Somebody with power and influence has to appropriate the funds accordingly.

And terrorists don't magically learn a concept implemented about what...70 years ago was? 65? Any 4-year chemical engineering degree could cook up something capable of killing thousands of people. The sad truth is that all the "inconveniences" you face are really what protects us from what are foreign policy goals have made us. I agree that foreign policy isn't that great, and so does the president, but the sharp differences in political opinion between the military, politicians, the janitors in your school, your dentist, etc. all influence politics into what it is today.

@the school time thing: Yeah... I don't know where the hell you read that but the power of school hours rest with the local government rather than the federal government. Unlike the UK where some people live from this forum (jack, loki, etc) where the power is with the parliment. If you stop complaining about the free education you receive which GAVE you the power to thing for yourself then maybe you'd respect it more.

@health care: Yeah... health care has been shitty here since WAAAY before you or anybody here was born. It has been impossible to get a check up for a long time man... presidents have been trying to fix this for a long-ass time (Clinton). But then again comes the argument: people who actually WANTED for the health care to stay the same had been making sure it didn't change. Finally, change is a'coming and things are getting much and much easier.

And btw, about the comment of racism: if I hear the word "racist" on this forum again, whether it be as an insult or comment, I will delete it.

Y'know, the funniest thing is, Arnold Schwarzeneggar is all for this. You know, the movie star who make some of the most violent films of the 80's...

It's a double edged sword. Yes, I'm all for minors being banned from playing excessively violent video games, but based on ratings. In my opinion, this talks about stopping kids who are legally old enough from buying certain video games on the basis that they're violent. If they're at the limit of the rating, they should be able to buy.

Also, a lot of the parent's are to blame. The number of times I've walked into game to see 10 year olds trying to buy Halo, or the 7 year old who doesn't want The Sims, but does want Fallout 3, and whose parents are willing to let him. That ought to be punishable. As far as I know, the ratings are legally binding, so criminal proceedings aren't out the question...

I work at Sainsbury's, and we're supposed to stop the sale if we think it's being bought for minors, but sometimes it's impossible to check. I mean, most of the time, it's things like LoZ: ST, which I would happily let anyone play, but you get the occasional MW2, and you can't always tell.

The human mind isn't finished wiring until adulthood, and that's the main premise of those against game sales to minors. Oh, and Cappy, keep in mind that The Governator was acting those roles and is actually a family-oriented and warmhearted person from what I've read. His wife is actually one of the most influencial democrats in American even when he himself is a republican (barely). He kinda takes both sides of the arguments which is a good quality (but he may or may not be able to implement his legislation that well)

...and it is safe to sell games to minors who have parents or older acquantences present.

I fail to see how since thats what happens now anyway, and I've never heard any of the parents/people asking their child to stop playing it because it's too violent. The child is not at fault for wanting to play the game. Every child wants to play a nice video game. It's up to the parent (and the parent alone) to be strict about how long it's played or if they should even let their child play it and thats where the system fails. Simply because the adult is too uncaring and just wants the child out of the way....

Ofcourse, this is all just pure speculation. It's what I've seen with my own eyes so it's most likely biased to some degree.

@Ice: Sarcasm is a wonderful thing.

There was somethign a few months back about MW2, and a mother bought it for her 15 year old son, watched him play it, and was then outraged by the level of violence. She went on a TV show shouting about it, but no-one stopped to ask why she had ignored the big '18' label on the front of the box.
