It would be great if one day an updated version on JK2 gets released with improved graphics etc. They could call it Jedi Knight II HD! lol

I doubt it, thats hard to reverse ingeneer. Still awesome though. I hope it was coded well enough to put in modern things like bumpmaps and displacement maps,... Imagine jk2 running on a frostbite2 like engine!

Well that's an interesting move. Do you think there's still people out there interested enough in jk2 and jk3 to dedicate the significant amount of time it would take to make something out of this? And secondly, do you think there's enough of a community left to care if anyone does? And thirdly, do you think this announcement and the effective shutting down of LucasArts signifies the death of the master servers? Maybe releasing the source was to preempt an imminent shutdown. That would suck.
If that's the case, it wouldn't matter that they've released the source because whatever scattered community is left over these days will be cut in half at least Maaan, I don't want that to happen. I hope they keep the master servers up.
I'm downloading it just in case, but I'm not sure if I'll put much effort into it anytime soon. I mean, I already have a pretty awesome mod running that accomplishes pretty much everything I ever wanted it to. They also say it probably would take a great deal of effort to get it working with retail assets, and I'm not sure why they would say that. Did they not release a working, compiling version of the source? I mean, theoretically you should be able to compile it as is and end up with jk2 1.04 right? Have you tried yet?
Any thoughts on what kinds of things people might turn this source into? Heard any creative ideas popping up out there in the ether?

Sad to see that company died. Probably the best games I've played (with exception of defrag which I would probably rank as #1 game of all time) have come from lucas arts. I have fond memories of Tie fighter, rebel assault 1 &2, star wars Rebellion (under rated game), dark forces, jk1 and jk2 (i played both online), almost forgot Mysteries of the Sith as well.

Also people hate on quake 3, but as jk2 and jka show, you need a good engine if you want to have a base for making a great game. Without Quake Engine and ID games, there would be no Castle Woflenstein or jk games series.
