Dropbox is the most awesome thing ever. (free too)
Dropbox.
You get 2gb when you sign up (free) but can get up to 10gb (also free). An 8gb flash drive is $20 on Amazon, so dropbox gives you more space (did I mention it's free?) ... and there's no flash drive to lose since it's all synced up online. It makes this folder on your computer where you just drag stuff in and it syncs them up. Share an entire folder with someone and it just automatically syncs up whatever you put in it with whoever is invited to share that folder. If you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone, there's a dropbox app that lets you open up all your stuff right from there.
My story:
So I have a few episodes of Doctor Who that I want to take with me to our office to watch on the nice giant projector we have set up. Why would I watch them on my small computer monitor when I can use an entire wall as my monitor, right? Problem is, I don't have a flash drive large enough to hold them. I've been using Dropbox for the longest time now for small files and things I always want with me, because I can pull them up on any computer or on my iPhone if I need to and they're always there, nice and easy, and I have folders set up for a few of my friends that we drop random crap or business stuff into to make sure we all have it and it's all up to date. But I never tried uploading a large (600+mb) file to it before. I dragged it into my dropbox folder and it synced instantly. Apparently, dropbox automagically recognizes that someone else somewhere out there has already uploaded the same episodes, and so it didn't make me upload them again. It just magically synced them right up.
Problem is, now I'm running out of space (damn you, doctor who!) so I need to get some more referrals. So all you cake lovers need to use this link to sign up so we both get an extra 250mb of space: --(old link removed)--
Do eet now!! Or else I can't watch anymore doctor who You wouldn't want to deprive a starving rodian of his entertainment, now would you??
...Yes, this post was one big advertisement. Tough. But wait there's more! Act now, and I'll give a thousand points to anyone who signs up! Wow!!! (This is commonly referred to as a bribe.)
...Seriously, though, dropbox is amazing. And free. You can't beat that.

how can you also get 10 gigs for free? I'll download it in a minute, but I'm not gonna pay for it. (yet)
edit: oh nvm I get it

Re: Dropbox is the most awesome thing ever. (free too)
Yeah the whole point is it's free. I mean, you can pay for 50gb if you want, and 100 bucks for a year isn't bad, Apple's MobileMe gives you 20gb for the same price, for example. But still, I wouldn't pay for it.
Just to clarify for anybody else who might be confused, you get the 10gb by referring other people. You start with 2gb and go up from there. So you get 250mb extra for using my link, then 250mb for each person you refer using your own link you get after you sign up. I was able to get 4gb when dropbox first came out no problem, and they've increased the cap to 10gb for free now, so.. I want moar!! Me hungry!!!

Re: Dropbox is the most awesome thing ever. (free too)
nah. Not when you use the link, it's all anonymous. But it only gives you the extra space once per person. Or per computer, or something. So unless you use a different computer it wouldn't do it, so don't waste your time.
Just sign up once for yourself and then we both get extra space. I'm sure you'll find lots of good uses for your dropbox.

I love the programming of this service. On my iPod Touch, it allows me to download PDF files straight to iBooks, which is nifty for reading long documents on the go.

Hey, when I bake a cake I bake a CAKE man.
And yeah, dropbox integrates very nicely with Apple things. I have a ton of videos stored up there for emergency entertainment, stuff that I simply don't have the space to keep on my iPhone. The best part, though, is the file sharing. You set up a shared folder with someone, and instead of uploading it to some server somewhere and linking it or doing a file transfer in an IM, you just drag it into your dropbox and bammo, they get it too in their own dropbox right away. It's awesome.
Also, anything you put in your public folder gets a link attached to it, so you can just give people that link if you still prefer links.
Also also: Plus a thousand points to Ice and 'blivvy.

Well I guess I'll have to share my story with everyone so that you guys can sign up and give Wonko more space on his Dropbox thing.Wonko the Sane wrote:

My story: (and it's coincidentally JKA related too)
So I know a guy from way back who I met earlier today for the first time in a few years right? Well he's actually a big fan of jk2 and still plays it on his GameCube. They don't sell JKA anymore and he hates Microsoft and has a Mac, so I told him there wouldn't be any luck buying it online. I found a crack for the Mac version of JKA on a certain website (lets just leave it at that), and I can "obtain" the image files, put it in my Dropbox, and send him a link with a zipped folder with the files. And then he can just unzip it and we can play JKA on Wonko's server once I get him used to the controls. I haven't actually done this yet I'll get around to it eventually (you know what that means).
The end. Forgive my rambling sentences I don't feel like caring about sentence structure.
so go download it fools.

Re: Dropbox is the most awesome thing ever. (free too)
just drag/drop the file to the dropbox folder and it can be accessed anywhere
...and drop it to the public folder if you want to send it to other people w/o having to wait for a long-ass upload So If you want to send a few tracks from the latest bluegrass album to, say, Blivvy, you just put it in the public folder, right click, and click on copy link. Then, you send to link to Blivvy and he can listen to the tracks online from his browser or download them directly

Or you can just set up a shared a folder with him (right click any folder to share it with someone) and then all you gotta do is drag 'em in there and he gets them automagically.
Thousand points to Kai for getting the most awesome thing evar to be free, and an extra thousand for getting Sora set up too, sorta
Thousand points to Sora if he shows his face around here!
