jedi academy portal mod
http://forums.filefront.com/sw-jk3-modding-mapping-editing/435840-thinking-portals.html
It's not clear how they're doing this, but it's more or less done already. I wonder if this would be possible in jk2...

Re: jedi academy portal mod
If they perfected that mod it would be a lot of fun. And if there was a map pack to go with it too.
I don't see why it couldn't be done in jk2. It's just tele'n people around :p

Well it isn't me, I'm Certifiably Sane.
That does look awesome though. Honestly, it wouldn't be too hard to create something similar in jk2. But I hate when modders steal someone else's unique ideas, and that's definitely a unique idea for jk, so I'm not about to even make an attempt. Besides, I'm busy added something else at the moment.

Re: jedi academy portal mod
I thought I read or heard somewhere that the jk3 portal mod was open source? Is that true?
Edit: Just scoured that thread again and saw the guy making it stated his intentions at releasing the code with the final project, but it doesn't appear to have been released yet.
If he does release his code, just a heads up guys, I'm totally including this in our server. But like I said before, if he decides not to make it open source and let people use his code, I'm not gonna go yoinking it.

Re: jedi academy portal mod
Chances are that it's most likely not. Raz0r isn't one for making his stuff open source. If I begged, I'd probably get my hands on it but I'm not one for begging

Re: jedi academy portal mod
Well, if you want to get technical, it's already been done on the q3 engine since the Source engine is a fork of GoldSource which was based on the id tech 3 (q3) engine. Just sayin'.
But yeah, it'd be nice if he released it but he has low standards when it comes to open-source JA code. It has a habit of getting used without credit.

Re: jedi academy portal mod
Expect a mini mod in a week or so. People can get a taste of it, and perhaps a mapper might have some inspiration ;o
The final release might include all of the code to get more people interested in making their own code mods. That's my primary goal, if you haven't realised.
That was back at the end of April. Hopefully development of this thing doesn't stall out.

Ahh, I stand corrected. That's good though.

Re: jedi academy portal mod
I have formally requested his permission and/or source to create a version of this for our server, by way of a limerick:
Consequently, Kai and I also wrote this one for Jack:
I am a man from the asylum.
I saw your mod files, can I has thum?
If you concede
I will proceed
To ship to you a barrel of rum.
Consequently, Kai and I also wrote this one for Jack:
This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.
His rum was the best in all of Barbados!
His raven locks breeze
'cross all seven seas
But really now, why is the f%$!king rum gone goddammit!?!

Re: jedi academy portal mod
Success!
I have received permission to include portals in my mod! I'd have written my own portals, but Raz0r apparently got some math geek to write all kinds of fancy portal mathematics for him which I really didn't want to try to do myself. Freggin' vector math and all that nonsense. But he gave me the code as well so I should be all set.
Just one problem... I promised the lad two barrels of rum, one of them spiced and I'm all out. So uh, somebody get me some rum, STAT!!!

Rodian: ICE!!!!!!!!! GODDAMNIT!!! It's me, Wonko. WHERE'S MY FREGGIN' RUM MAN GOSH!!
Ice: Screw you! [Ice takes out his wand, preparing to cast his spell.] Reducio!
Ice: Ah, that's better.
Wonko [with a faint, weak voice]: I'll get you Icecreaman! I'll get you!
Ice: Riiiigght.
Re: jedi academy portal mod
...so will the code you got work on jk2 as well, as this is a JKA mod so I imagine certain values or pieces of the code may be JKA-specific? I know they run on the same engine, but some parts of the JKA feel a bit different than JK2, so I'm not sure if they (LucasArts or whoever they hired) just tinkered with some values or rewrote the thing.
Re: jedi academy portal mod
JK2 and JK3 are written in the same language and run off the same engine, jk3 just has a lot of more advanced stuff in general. Basically, all I was hoping to get was the mathematics that govern the portal physics as I hate vector math. The rest I can mostly do myself, but it'll make my job a lot simpler to have the rest of the code anyways.
Some of the code may be jk3 specific, but I can easily rewrite it to fit into the physics/weapons/whatever else jk2 uses. Honestly, there isn't really that much code involved here so it shouldn't take too much effort once I set aside some time and put my mind to it.
I still have to finish the models and effects I was working on before first, though. I should have some time in the next couple weeks to crank it all out.
