Map tutorials
Good tutorial sites:
http://bubba.planetquake.gamespy.com/mapping.html
http://www.richdiesal.map-craft.com/
Random snippets of information I find useful:
FIRE EFFECTS:
With something like fire, you need to use what's called the "FX runner." This is basically an entity that draws a cool effect- like a water splash, an energy blast, or a bit of fire.
First, right click in the grid section of radiant. Then scroll to fx > fx_runner.
move this blue box to where you want your fire to be.
Hit "N" to bring up the entity window with this box selected.
Enter:
Key: fxFile
value: env/fire
BACKGROUND MUSIC:
For background music, hit n with a regular (non entity) brush selected. You should be in worldspawn. Add:
Key: music
value: pathtomymusic
Example: The path to my song is music/mario.mp3 so I have
Key: music
value: music/mario.mp3
HAND SHAPED TERRAIN:
The programs designed to create blended terrains (such as terragen, etc) are really difficult to understand, especially for beginners. This link explains how to craft terrain by hand.

CEL SHADER:
This adds an "outline" around brushes on a map for cartoon effects. You need to download a shader file, which is linked in this excellent tutorial:

Re: Map tutorials
What is it you can't find? The program? A certain entity? The clitoris? Post a specific question and I'm sure we can point you in the right direction

Re: Map tutorials
Have you tried pressing run on start? Think for yourself a little bit. You're literally asking us whether you're supposed to run a file you want to install. That's like asking if you're supposed to open a bag of chips before you eat them :/
