Re: best console to buy?
If you don't play them, you don't need 'em. Give it a couple of years, and you'll be seeing PlayStation 4, another X-Box, etc. I know they had some new Wii thing come out recently. To be future-proof, you're best off upgrading your current computer if you purchased it in the last 3-4 ish years, or purchasing a new one if your current one has been around for a while and cannot play any decent games/sucks altogether and only plays JK2.
Gaming consoles are advertised for pretty much everything except gaming, and then it' like, "Oh, and it plays games too, but you already know that." That's basically been the premise behind Sony's marketing campaign. I use my PS3 mostly for streaming Netflix, I'd say 80 percent Netflix and 20 percent gaming for the last year or so. Before that, it was more-frequent, but I feel like it's just more fun to discover new shows on Netflix than play games.
Also, my PS3 has broken twice and both times I have not been able to recover my data. The first time it broke, I learned the lesson that I must back up my data, but I only managed to back up one game (Fallout 3, but only up until a point). The second time it broke (same problem, flashing red light of death) was only some months after. I got sent different PS3s both times, so it isn't as if it was the same one. Actually, the second one they sent (only a few months ago actually) is the newer slim one with more space, so that's cool I guess.
So, just stick with computer gaming for now. But it's up to you, I suppose. See what other people have to say.

I'm sure 'blivvy will weigh in on this one. I guess we should ask is this for you or for someone else? 'cause that changes things.
If it's for you and you don't really play them, I'm with Ice, don't bother. Invest in your computer instead.
For someone else, I guess then it really depends on what types of games they want to use it for because each console specializes in different genres from what I know. Wii, while outdated, is the best for family games I believe. Nintendo still has the market cornered on that type of stuff and the characters and games like Mario are always going to be classics and can't be replaced so easily.
For someone who likes FPS games, I think XBox is the current heavyweight champ? I'll defer to someone else's knowledge here though. I think XBox also takes the crown when it comes to online multiplayer stuff, right guys?
Basically, from what I know, XBox has been really killing it in the console gaming space.
For me, though, nothing beats my Atari.

Like Ice said, it might be better to wait and see what the new consoles have to offer. There's not much difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3. As far as graphics go, basically they look the same. Although some games do perform better on the 360 (I heard Bethesda games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls tend to crash a lot more on PS3).
You can get most of the same games apart from a few exclusives on each console. PS3 has free online with the option of upgrading to PS Plus (gives early access to some games and offers on other stuff) whereas you have to pay for Xbox Live Gold to play games online. I haven't tried the Wii U but it doesn't sound groundbreaking tbh.
As far as Kinect & PS Move go, I wouldn't bother with them.

Yeah, I heard the Wii U wasn't quite all it should have been.
@Wonko, the PS3 and X-Box are essentially the same. PS3 has free online (no annual membership fees), so that is definitely a big plus. You cannot even use Internet Explorer on the X-Box without paying (I was hanging out with some friends a week ago, and we wanted to stream something through IE on my friend's X-Box. But he didn't have the "Gold" membership, so IE did not even work).
Some games perform better on the PS3, some on the X-Box. It totally depends.

wii U isn't good qua hardware. Just wait half a year. The "steambpx" now called piston was premiered at ces. This might bring a rumble of new age consoles. Also the new xbox will be showed at the next e3 probably the new PS4 to.
And multiplayer on ps3 kinda sucks. The main server gets closed very quickly mostly. As for xbox multiplayer you can play in parties more then on one main server.
