Gone for a while

Post by Loki on Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:32 am

I have to go for a while. After many attempts to fix the problems with my PC, it's nearing it death I think. Screen flickering, constant restarts and many other problems. These, I have tried and failed at fixing. My only options are to format (which might fix the problem for a couple more months), buy a new one (which I cannot afford at this time) or take it to be fixed/upgraded (which, like the previous option, I cannot afford.)

I backed up (what I consider) my most important files to my flash drive for futrue use. This includes the source files for the maps I'm working on. The worst thing is, I can't actually remember the password for my account here. Firefox is the only thing storing it. I can't figure it out so I'll probably make a new one when/if I return.

See you guys later (I hope.)

I never used it, but it should work.
I hope it's not too late.

Good luck with that, Crazy.

I predict in Crazy's very near future some of this: Willy Nilly, a lot of this: Banging Head, one or two of these: affraid, the occasional Hissy Fit when things don't go the way he expects, many sleepless nights Zombie Tired, a little Joystick while trying to figure out why everything is red when it should be blue, then he'll give up only to come back and Red X once or twice. Finally, he'll Panic Attack and come begging me for help and I'll just be all Coffee. Then he'll offer me a bribe and I'll get all Kung Fu on his computer's ass and Bash that thing into submission until it Bowing to the power of the Oreo Cookie.

Bring it. Boxing

Ok, it seems my pc is working once again but I don't know how long for. In any case, my first priority is to get everything I can backed-up for use later on. I'm sure it will fake yet another death on me but thanks to Ice, I can access the forums outside of this PC (yeah, thanks anyway Bulwa. Razz )

Sherlock "Hi, I'm a Mac."

Joystick "And I'm a PC."

Sherlock "Hey, what's wrong, PC? You look a little frustrated."

Joystick "Yeah, it's all these random bluescreens and crashes, I really don't understand it!"

Sherlock "Aw, that's too bad, anything I can do? Some coffee maybe? You look like you've been up all night."

Joystick Zombie Tired "Oh that would be great, thanks, Mac. I haven't slept in days! First, I got a virus infestation, so I had to format and reinstall everything, but then my Windows license wouldn't work so I had to call up Microsoft and pay $30 a minute while I was on hold waiting for a service rep to help me figure out what happened. Turns out HP ripped me off by installing some kind of mass license copy of XP and, wouldn't you know it, after only seven years they've stopped supporting XP!"

SherlockCoffee "Really? Wow, I can't believe that. Seven years, you say?"

Joystick Hissy Fit "Yeah! I mean, it's not my fault Microsoft's next two operating systems suck so horribly that I'm forced to use an OS from the stone age, is it?"

Sherlock "Well, I suppose that kinda..."

Joystick "...and once I FINALLY got XP installed, I forgot to do the ten hours of required updates to patch my system and so I had twenty hackers break into my computer all at the same time, use it to try to break into the IRS Dbase, and then leave me hanging high and dry while I tried to explain the situation to the feds at my doorstep!"

Sherlock "Oh wow, that's just awf--"

Joystick "AND THEN, to top it all off, after they got done looking through every file on my computer, the thing starts bluescreening left and right!!"

Sherlock "Hey PC, you know if you--"

Joystick "I mean, I just want to read my e-mail for crying out loud!!"

Sherlock "PC, if you just--"

Joystick "Is that too much to ask, Mac?! Is it really?!!"

Sherlock "Well, you are a PC, after all. It sorta comes with the territory."

Joystick "But how come you never have these kinds of problems, Mac?"

Sherlock

*Epic BUMP!*

Sorry bout that. Just wanted to give a little update. After trying everything I know about my PC, (which, isn't much Sad ) I think have found the problem.

I suspect it's my graphics card and completely unrelated to the drivers. Since this PC is just a couple of years younger than me, it's become pretty weary so the card most likely has burned out. I'll be ripping my base to shreads to remove it and get a closer look and if the damage is bad, I'll get a replacement (though, that could be difficult cause of it's age and companies lack of support for old units.) The most difficult part is that I don't know what cards my unit can support.

Which do you think is a better GFX card? ATI Radeon or nVidia? (Please, if you don't know what your talking about, then don't anwser this question.)

I've always loved ATI cards. Most bang for your buck. nVidia makes some very high-end cards (ATI used to dominate that market years ago), but they're outrageously expensive. Just grab whatever ATI card you can afford and you'll be good.

AGP has been replaced by PCI Express these days, but you can still find AGP cards off of places like newegg, though there aren't many of them left. I can't imagine your computer is older than AGP and if it is you might be out of luck.

While unsure of what cards would fit my unit (Ya, I'm a noob when it comes down to it Razz ) I caused more problems. I'm forced to use my stupid guest account because my one keeps crashing Sad

My unit is a Packard Bell iMedia VL 5095. It's a co.uk website so I'm unsure if there are PB units in US.

Crazy I want to try and help you..

You have to concider, a few aspects.

1. It could be while your PC is crashing, or just isn't working to the standard is, usually it's the power supply, It may be worn out for such reasons, it's old and needs a replacement or you may have bad wiring in your house, such as , If the power goes out and you PC is on it could create a power surge.

2. It could be you may have too much data on your computer which may slow it down.

3. You could without even knowing it contracted a Virus, the most common are Trojans which attack files and corrupt them to make errors. It's very easy to hack a PC (I'm with you Wonko, lone live Mac lol)

4. Or the most obvious reason it's just old and worn out.

I would see first of all If it is the power supply, that may be something that just simply needs a replacement. Check that out first.

Good luck my friend Smile and let me know, the things you have described have happend to me before and 4 people said it was the power supply , I changed it and it worked, don't go breakig the bank until you have explored all avenues.. Although a PC is always good, seeing every week theres a new model out lol..

Cheers man, let me know what the turn of events are my friend.
