Re: Official Music Thread
The bassist from the band Slipknot died:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/top/all/7020146.html
RIP
edit: oh, and a word to the wise (and not wise as well), singing about suicide doesn't mean you have to do it so don't kill yourself because that's kinda against what the whole purpose of your body's defense mechanism...
his death has to be determined but just in case that's what it was it's no good!

Re: Official Music Thread
I was listening to some of those annoying artists today that go around, fed by those ridiculous record label companies, and sing repetitive pop songs with virtually no talent, and I was reminded of the good times, when music was fresh and gangster much like this song. I remember when we'd all go around singing and grooving to all the half-decent musics and life wasn't about tweeting away at every nimrod's attempt at making good music!
Anyway, that's my mini-rant about society and that music machine that perpetually pervades throughout the country, degrading away at any sense of talent and masking it behind a realm of uncertainty. This song always used to be stuck in my head
Re: Official Music Thread
I agree. Hardly any decent music coming out these days. Not only has it all been done before, but half the new artists these days, even a lot of the established ones for that matter don't even write their own material. It's all just generic force-fed, regurgitated garbage put out by some hired writer who thinks certain lyrics will be catchy enough to make a few bucks. But I ask you, where's the emotion? Where's the connection to the music?
For me to enjoy a song or an artist, I need to hear the emotion in the voice of the singer, meaning he/she either wrote the song or was personally involved in writing it. An artist needs to have a connection to the music they create or it's not even worth my time.
The Wallflowers are among my all time favorite artists mostly due to Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan. He wrote his own stuff, quite masterfully I might add, and it shows in every song he sings. They haven't put out a new album in ages and, in my opinion, nothing today even comes close to the stuff they were doing in the 90's.
Although, in recent history every now and again a real gem comes along, like this one from '07, although the rest of their album is crap compared to it:
But you're right, Ice, the RHCP knew where it was at back in the day. They made some great stuff and I love how they referenced other great artists like Mazzy Star in their songs. She's referenced in the song "Aeroplane".
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a more modern band that maintain their roots in the days of the old school, writing all their own lyrics based on their own personal experiences and coming up with some really great music as a result, and I love when they do long intros like bands used to do before most of you were born. Check this out:
Even their newest album was pretty good. Awesome video to go with it too.
Three thousand points if you can list all three Alice in Wonderland references in this song/video, and another thousand points a piece for each additional pop culture reference you can find. I count four extra pop culture references after the Alice in Wonderland ones. If you list one that I didn't find, I'll give you 2,000 points.
But still, in my mind, nothing quite beats the good old days:
But, for serial people, if you play no other song from this post, play this one. Written by Bob Dylan, made famous by the one, the only, the Jimi Hendrix. These lyrics truly are the lyrics of the ages and will likely never cease being relevant. Epic and deep, the ultimate in societal commentaries. You can get behind this one for sure, Ice.

Re: Official Music Thread
I Love Jimi Hendrix, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the whole lot. Sorry about the mini-rant, but I listened to RHCP's new single and didn't like it. I feel the same way about emotion and connections to the music. For some reason, I watch that America's Got Talent show every now and then and I hate all the consumerism. I hate watching the crowd cheer when some guy sings blandly or some dudes dance to silly routines. Ah, well, at least some of us are still sane!
edit: a few more of my favs from when I was growing up
I hope it gets better (music, that is)

Re: Official Music Thread
It won't. High fidelity sound systems have given way to tinny white Apple ear buds. High quality analog recordings have given way to 128kbps digital crap that sounds like it was recorded in some kid's basement.
Point is, without an appreciation for great music artists won't bother making it anymore.
Thanks for reminding me that I have to buy Where is My Mind, though, that's a great song. I may even have some Amazon credit or something for a free song...
No guesses on the references in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs video?

Re: Official Music Thread
AIW references:
1)"Off with your head"
2)"Looking glass, take the past..
And that's all I notice...
heh, artists nowadays may know how to play the game, but the rules can always change.

Re: Official Music Thread
That's two of the three, and don't forget the other pop culture references!
Re: Official Music Thread
