I know what you did last summer. On the Internet.

Post by Wonko the Sane on Thu Jul 04, 2013 10:11 am

I know we've talked about this in some other threads before, but let's go ahead and give it its own thread.  Tracking what you do on the intertubes is a huge business right now and it's seriously getting a bit out of control.

Twitter, like a lot of other sites, has started tracking everyone after they leave the twitter website.  So basically, just by having an account, they're going to be collecting information about you from all over the web.  Not even just where you go either, but where you live, what your interests are, what you're buying, what people are buying for you, what you eat, what your pet eats... and then there's the slightly scarier side of it when they buy information from a third party to correlate everything they know about you from tracking you on the web with all kinds of personal information about you like... your medical history.

Lifehacker has some interesting reads on why it's such a big deal and what you can do about it.

Some sites obey the "Do Not Track" setting browsers are including these days, but it's just a flag that sticks its hand up and says "I don't want to be tracked!"  It doesn't force anyone to do or not do anything.  So you kinda have to take your own precautions.  Twitter has a couple checkboxes in its settings to let you turn off its extra tracking stuff.  Google has a dashboard that lets you control all your information.  But for every other site on the internet (they all track you these days) you can grab a browser plugin that actively blocks tracking scripts.

I've used Ghostery for a long time now, but Lifehacker suggests a new one, Disconnect.  Anyone used Disconnect?

I think I'm going to stick with Ghostery just 'cause it has worked fine for me since I got it.

 edit:

I saw that article also.  I think as long as you have that thing unchecked, you're fine.

Well that's interesting.  I've always had their GhostRank thing disabled but it sounds like they're trying to play both sides of the fence there.  Do you use a different plugin Trey?

Yes. All about dem monies.

No. I'm disappointingly apathetic in regards to this topic.

Wow that's really neat. I've checked out Tor before and it's a really neat initiative. Incredibly useful for people in countries that really crack down on freedom of speech. That thing is like a CIA Spook in a box or something. The kind of thing you'd hope you were getting when you ordered those spy decoder rings from the back page of a magazine.
