The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Okay not really death to all humans, but I had no idea these little bugs were on a 17 year migration pattern and they're going to return to the east coast from about Virginia up past New York this year sometime in April! :O

If you don't know what a cicada is:
I've never seen one but I've heard that sound before. There's other videos you can find of what it sounds like when there's a whole swarm of them in your area doing that all day long. They also shed their outer shells and I think I remember seeing some of those as a kid. Could be kinda neat, could be kinda annoying, definitely gonna be interesting and only happens once every 17 years apparently. That part is cool.
Hey blivs, do these guys exist out there? Some places here in the South hear that sound all summer long almost nonstop.
Edit: Oh crap! Some people call it the 17 year invasion:
Death to all humans was right after all!

Nah I don't remember ever seen them over here. I think I have heard that sound before but prob heard it on tv. We don't get a lot of bugs and stuff over here, must not be warm enough. We just get the usual flys & bees etc. but not been getting as much of those around here either. I remember hearing the crickets and all at night when I was in the US. You don't hear anything like that here lol.

They're back? THEY'RE BACK!!!
Dude I had so much fun with these guys as a kid. I used to fill up water guns and go cicada hunting, basically shooting the crap out of them. They're really noisy but you get used to them. I was in elementary school when these guys last came. It was less than 17 years ago, though.

Wait, no crickets even, Blivs? Crickets are great in the summer. Okay, what about fireflies? Tell me you get to go firefly hunting!
Bugs are one of the reasons I like living further north where it gets cold enough during the winter to kill off all the nasty ones. Then in the summer the only real bugs we have to deal with are pretty harmless. We hear a few of the cicadas here every summer, but this is talking about a mass 17 year migration event. I mean, look at how many there are in that second video.
I've never actually seen a live one myself, but we do find their shells hanging onto trees after they've shed them.
Grab yer water pistol partner!

Ah, cicadas. It brings back memories of catching them in elementary school and removing parts of them. And trying to incite cicada-to-mouth contact in other children.

If you lived further down south around MD/VA/D.C. you'd understand. I'm pretty sure they taught us the anatomy of cicadas in elementary school and we did stuff in Art class about them. If you didn't torture the crap out of them, you just didn't exist lol. Or you were a girl.
Also, water pistols? I don't know how you do it up there, but I still have a bag at my parents' house filled with water guns this size:
Ah, good times. Haven't broken these babies out since the fifth grade.

Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
haha I just IP traced you Trey
My cousin goes to your school, as do many people I know haha. I sorta wish I went there since they offered me full tuition scholarship, but whatevs...
I bet I've seen you there whenever I've visited I didn't know you lived so close. It was my second-choice school. (for privacy's sake I won't mention which, if you care about that kind of thing).

Those aren't Southern states. Ol' Bamma is a true Southern state.
Country rooooaaaads, take me hoooooooooooome!
Snap, I want to play some jk2 now. If anyone's interested, I'll probably be poking around the server for a bit this afternoon. Maybe I'll even find my jk3 disc and see what the servers are like over there these days.

Eh, I'm not concerned. I don't have much of an online presence, so anyone all that interested in actually finding me would be rather hard-pressed.

Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Still haven't seen any cicadas...how about you guys?
Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Check the link I put in the first post. The soil temperatures have to reach 64 degrees before they start to emerge and begin their life cycle.
I see some light orange (54F+) dots in the map and a lot of yellows still, but barely any of the dark orange 64F dots.

Nope haven't seen any. But that's probably because we don't have them over here

Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
So if you check that map again, there's now a band of them working their way up the coast. I haven't seen them yet where I am though. What about you Ice?
Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Not that I've noticed, but there's certainly been increased chatter among folk 'round here about 'em. I'll let you know if I see any. The weather here has been very bipolar. One day it's in the 90's and the next it's in the 60's.
Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Yeah, yesterday was 50 degrees, no idea what was up with that.
Today it's a more reasonable 60 but that's a far cry from the 80 we had a few days ago. Seriously, make up your mind already

Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Trey, do you live in bmore? I work in the city on weekdays. The weather is insane. The other day, I was in shorts and a sleeveless shirt playing bball in the scorching sun, and the next, I was freezing when I was out at night in pants and a shirt with a jacket. Like, legitimately shivering (granted, it was a very light jacket).

No, I live in Columbia while school is out.

Re: The Return of the Cicadas. Death to all humans!
Saw this random tweet today:
I guess it's not happening guys.
The cicadas aren't coming. I've been in this bunker for 3 weeks and I'm sick of saltines and canned beans. I've made a huge, huge mistake.
I guess it's not happening guys.
