Star Wars: Episode VII

Post by Da Llama on Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:00 pm

So, apparently Disney have bought Lucasart and are apparently adding onto the Star Wars saga.
Wikipedia wrote:On October 30, 2012, as part of its statement that it had agreed to acquire Lucasfilm, The Walt Disney Company announced a Star Wars Episode VII "targeted for release in 2015.

Even though George Lucas said:
George Lucas and some other guy from a Wikipedia source wrote:Q: Does that mean you won't do Episodes VII, VIII and IX?
Lucas: I will not do VII, VIII and IX.
Q: You will not? Will they be made by somebody else?
Lucas: No. They will not.
Q: So this trilogy ends it?
Lucas: This is it. This is all there is.

So, I ask you, What do you think of the new episode? Will this make the saga better or ruin it? What are your thoughts on this?

Do you expect more of Fight 2 ?
or more of woohoo ?

and then I notice that you guys were already discussing this in the end of the world thread. Ranting

We actually have small discussions about this going on in both the end of the world and the movies threads, but it's probably better to consolidate all that here.

I'm thinking there's a positive and negative side to this. It means we'll get more Star Wars movies, so that's good. They say they're going to do one new movie every 2-3 years now. And Disney is a pretty decent choice for someone to take over. I mean, the goofy stuff aside (no pun intended) they make some pretty decent movies when they want to. There's also a ton of source material with the expanded universe and all that. Plenty of stories left to tell. I'd love to see an Old Republic style story myself.

On the other hand, the thing that made Star Wars great was the story. George Lucas was a master storyteller and I highly doubt anyone will be able to write as good a Star Wars saga as he did, no matter what story they're trying to tell.

So, for me, it's very two-sided. I want more Star Wars, but I don't want it to suck.

Edit: Was about to post this in the movies thread but I'll stick it here instead. I would also love a movie or two to be made based around Qui-Gon Jinn's life and story. From what I've read, he's got a pretty interesting story that could be told. I'm really hoping they make some movies that take place before the Galactic Empire. I feel like with all the games that revolve around its story and the New Republic, there's a lot they could do before that. Most likely they're going to do a story that takes place later on though with the New Republic. That's my guess. I just don't think it would be as good. I think they need to take a bit of a risk instead of playing it safe like that. Try something new and make it a really, really good story with good solid characters.

What do you guys think? Should they stick with characters we know and do a sequel or pick some random spot in the Star Wars timeframe and make up an entirely new story with new characters?

Well, if you look at some of the X-Men movies they made, some of them really weren't bad! They could most certainly make one of an existing character!

I agree with Qui-Gon being a good candidate for this--that's a great choice, Wonko. The thing is, many people who don't know Star Wars don't really know of him, so they might try to appeal to the mass and do someone of whom everyone knows, like Yoda or, possibly, Vader in the years after Episode III / before IV. Qui-Gon's story would require some serious Joss Whedon-level creativity, as well as an element of badass-ness mixed in with the calm, traditional jedi knight thing.

I read that Episode VII was gonna be an "original story" and that there might be an older Luke in it. Well by original I hope they don't mean that they are gonna change it so much, that it doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore.

The biggest thing that will affect that, I think, is the music to be honest. If they have anyone but John Williams do the music for these new movies, they just won't feel like Star Wars anymore.

As long as the movie has the same feel, and the same style music, I really don't mind brand new characters with a completely new story. The more I think about it the more I think I prefer new characters. That way it will feel less like a movie that's just trying to cash in on the existing stories and characters and over-do it until they ruin everything. At least if they ruin a new movie with new characters it won't make you roll your eyes every time you go back to watch one of the original movies.

It could, but it might end up looking pretty cheap if they try to make him a prominent character in the film.

I liked how they did it in Tron because you mostly only saw the back of his head. They sort of teased you with it and did it very tastefully I thought. And even then, it was only the one scene so it didn't impact the movie at all other than a subtle nod to the Tron fans.

I'm just going to leave this here....

...while I go cry because there will be no Han Solo in the new movies Crying or Very sad. I'm in such a bind over this new movie's possibilities.

George Lucas is donating the 4 billion dollars Disney paid for Star Wars to a foundation focused on education. Thumbs Up

George Lucas wrote:"I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future –- and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so."

I really liked the thrawn series.

I would be fine with them going with that as a trilogy. Plus Mara Jade was a sweet character that game out of that series as well as admiral Da'ala who play s a central role in the jedi academy trilogy years after that one.

Why does everyone hate the phantom menace?? I mean, it was pretty badass with Qui-Gon, Darth Maul and Jar Jar Binks.

and also, if they turn Star Wars into a musical, I expect this man:

to sing this:

I don't think anyone has a problem with The Phantom Menace on this forum. It's just people who grew up obsessed with the original trilogy who hate anything new who might not like it.
