Breaking Bad

Post by Theicecreaman on Sun Jul 15, 2012 2:42 pm

Who else is excited for the season premiere of Breaking Bad today on AMC? Shit's goin' down, man!

If you don't watch it, watch it! Season four just got available to watch on Netflix, so I just finished the ones I hadn't seen before.

A friend had me watch the first few episodes of the first season a while back and I just couldn't really get into it. I keep hearing how amazing it is with all the character development that happens but I just didn't find it all that interesting, dunno why. It's possible I didn't give it enough of a chance, but shows usually need to hook me from the first episode unless I'm just watching them to kill time. Most of my friends really like it though.

Shrug

I'm currently using Eureka on Netflix as my time killer show. It's not a bad show to watch an episode or two at a time before bed. It's not amazing finger licking good like some other shows, but it's good veg material. I'm waiting for most of my other favorite shows to start and finish a new season before I continue watching them.

Yeah, you have to really get into it. Like, beyond the first few episodes. It's like Doctor Who...it just get's so much better as you continue along with it. There's a lot more action and once Walter, the main character, becomes a legit Godfather-esque drug manufacturer/dealer, you're just all like, "OH SHIIT!!!"

But I honestly got into it from the beginning, so if you didn't like it, it may just not be your thing.

I know this isn't the Doctor Who thread, but Torchwood season one is just so...I don't know. I don't really like the character development. I feel like so much of it is contrived and unnecessary. I don't understand why every character has to be queer and why that one chick has to have an affair with that one guy. I mean, seriously...you'd think that she's smarter than that. It's weird.

What other shows do you guys watch? What other shows on Netflix are good? I think I heard you guys talking about Firefly...is that any good?

Torchwood is supposed to be controversial like that. It's just how it is, either you like it or you don't, but I promise it does become half decent later on (for a while) before going back into "meh"ness. So it's really just a time-killer type show, not something you really get into.

Firefly is amazingly awesome. Joss Whedon is a genius. Watch it. Now. It's on Netflix and it's only one season. You will not regret it.

Besides Firefly, I also liked Farscape back in the day. Also on Netflix and also amazing.

For a current show, I'd have to say Castle is my favorite at the moment. Absolutely amazing character development and storylines, and all the actors just work so well together to create very believable relationships. I had read good things about it, and I liked Nathan Fillion from Firefly, but when I watched it I was completely hooked before the opening credits, and it's a very rare thing for a show to be able to do that. If you watch Castle, watch it after watching Firefly because there are so many awesome little Firefly jokes and nods in it. So many! It's worth it and they're both amazing shows.

Oh, Firefly has a movie also called Serenity that wraps up the series, so watch that after watching the show.

breaking bad is the greatest show on television and not watching it is the biggest possible mistake.

you shouldn't bother with torchwood... just check out season 3 which is only 5 episodes and really really good. and you don't need to watch the previous seasons.

firefly is also fantastic and totally worth watching. all of the other joss whedon shows are also on netflix: buffy, angel, and dollhouse. I definitely recommend watching Buffy. I know it seems corny and weird, but it and doctor who have a very similar appeal and I'm pretty sure you'd be into it.

Hahaha. Yeah. Wonko, you should actually give it some more time...you'll like it! No pressure and all, but umm...yeah, Time's right. The cinematography, character development, acting, and kickassness just make it amazing. It's probably the most addicting show on television, and the only thing that sucks about it is that it makes every other show seem inferior. I watched the first three seasons twice, and I could easily watch them again. Trust us when we say that it just keeps on getting better. Make it your rainy-day show!

Also, one of the most memorable moments of the show (which you've already seen because it's the second episode):
3:48 for the awesomenesss.

I mean, after a while, you really feel like you're a part of the town and everything. They did such a good job with the setting and stuff.

Speaking of the greatest show on television, I can't wait for season 3 of The Walking Dead.

Is it worth watching? It appears to be on Netflix, so I'll add it (and Firefly) to my rainy-day shows. By both of the synopses for each show, The Walking Dead seems more interesting than Firefly...

I suppose I'll watch both pilots and see for myself.

Re: Breaking Bad

Post by Wonko the Sane on Thu Jul 19, 2012 10:08 am

Firefly is very different from Star Wars. Totally different character concepts. Sorry but you're way off the mark on that one so it's not even worth trying to explain the differences because if you watch it, it's pretty self-explanatory Razz

So the thing about The Walking Dead and that other one currently on called Falling Skies, and another show that has since ended called Jericho is.... they're all the same damn show.

Seriously, you swap out nuclear apocalypse for zombie apocalypse for alien apocalypse and the rest of these shows follow the same predicable whiny drama style formula. I watched the first two or three episodes of Walking Dead when it first came out because a friend said it was the best thing ever. After we finished watching them, I made some off-handed joke about how the season might have ended (something about how one of the jerkwad guys would be gone by the end but not before causing drama stuff and then he would have to be replaced by some other character exactly like him because you can't remove the drama causing character and then I said something about girls falling for the same guy or something, I don't remember the details anymore 'cause it was so long ago and I have not seen any episodes since then) and that friend came back after the end of the season and said I was exactly right.

I also recently watched the last three or four episodes of the most recent full season of Falling Skies and I made another similar joke to the person I was watching it with, who was very into the show. This time it was something about a politician getting involved in the show causing pointless drama and tension between two groups of people who should actually be focusing on "ohgodohgod we're all gonna die the aliens are invading!" instead of whining and bickering amongst themselves.

That person had already seen the first few episodes of the new season and said I was exactly right. I have not seen any more of that show either.

The point is, these shows are what I call "pointless drama" shows. The story is so predictable that you really don't have to watch it at all to know what's going to happen. They use whiny schoolgirl drama as the cliffhanger type thing that keeps you coming back next week instead of actual story progression. The story itself is mediocre at best. I was able to watch a season of Jericho on Netflix and it actually held my interest. The first episode of season two was when it started to taste like stale cookies. After I noticed that, I can't watch more than a couple episodes of these types of shows before the formula becomes so obviously apparent. You may enjoy Walking Dead for a while, so if you want to watch it go right ahead, but it will get old once you notice the formula.

Yes, I would love to watch a decent show about the zombie apocalypse. But not a pointless drama show where I can predict what's going to happen a full season before it happens. That said, if they ever do one of those shows about vampires, I'd probably watch it just because vampires are awesome. And I mean the kind of vampires that turn to dust when the sun comes up, just in case there are any doubts.

Watched half of Firefly episode 1...didn't really get into it at all. It didn't catch my attention. I'm probably suffering Wonko syndrome, which is like when Wonko didn't get into Breaking Bad even though it is the most amazing show ever.

I'm finish the rest later out of respect for ya'lls, but I don't think I'll watch the other episodes.

I mean, in Breaking Bad, you automatically get into the plot, and you want to know more about Walt. I honestly didn't know a thing that was going on, and there were just too many characters in the midst. Even Doctor Who episode 1 was more interesting...

Re: Breaking Bad

Firefly just sorta throws you into the middle of a story. Joss Whedon has a very different approach to story telling than most writers. It's not all laid out right in front of you like most Americans expect. The themes he deals with are often darker and require a bit more intelligence to figure out. He doesn't reward you with instant gratification AT ALL character-wise. Instead, he uses witty jokes and such in Firefly. His shows are all about long-term character development as the reward. But the jokes and incredible one-liners in Firefly have become the stuff of legend. Thinkgeek has a whole line of Firefly shirts.

So basically, you can't just watch half an episode and hope to understand what's going on. Especially with Firefly, I can think of a few episodes off the top of my head where it doesn't all come together until the last few minutes of the show. Sit and enjoy the ride. And pay attention, dammit. It's not the kind of the show you can half watch while doing something else and expect to get it. I have a feeling you were only half watching it, because the brilliance of the show is typically revealed to most people within the first five minute opening sequence. Everything from the lack of explosions or any kind of sound at all in space (far more realistic than most sci-fi) to the witty banter between these people who obviously know each other very well and work so well together but we as the viewer know absolutely nothing about at first. He doesn't baby you with character reveals up front. It comes little by little and in some cases not at all. He has no problem leaving you with unanswered questions.

I really don't know why I didn't get into Breaking Bad. I'm usually all about shows that focus on character development and reward you in the long run. It sounds like a far more intelligent kind of show and I typically enjoy that. But like I said I only watched a couple episodes so I may not have given it enough of a chance. Eventually I'll probably try again, I just don't have much time right now.

Start over when you do; you probably missed all the little things that make it an amazing show.

Like Doctor Who, Firefly doesn't grab you with the first episode. Unlike Doctor Who, when I go back and re-watch the first episode I can recognize how great it is. Joss does something in Firefly that's unlike anything else, and it takes some time to get to know the characters and understand exactly what the show really means.

yes I have! It's the most problematic of all of Joss's work, but it's also more daring in terms of the themes it explores.

Unsurprisingly, most of the problems with it root from meddling by FOX. Joss wanted a show that explored sexuality, and FOX wasn't comfortable with that. They wanted "sexy", not "sexual", so the first few episodes are kinda dull. Just keep on watching though, it turns out to be a lot of fun.
